'Spending a night away in a luxurious hotel seems a distant memory for most of us, but don't be afraid to recreate this look at home,' says Susan Hilton from the Big Bathroom Shop. 'Using Pinterest for inspiration, some of the most-pinned styles can be implemented easily, such as symmetry, shower heads and new bath towels.'

1 Bathroom lighting

Illuminate a bathroom's design with ambient lighting. With 10,300 monthly searches for bathroom lighting on Pinterest, getting it right will ensure you won't be left in the dark. If you're not sure where to start, opt for an LED strip, sleek wall-hung lights, backlit mirrors, or drama-inducing pendant lights.

2 Make the bath tub a focal point

Statement bath tubs are guaranteed head-turners. Give your bathroom a five-star feel with a free-standing style. With 8,700 searches a month, more households are looking for ways to soak away the stresses of the day.

'For something more practical build a tub into the space and surround it with marble or quartz for plenty of candle and soap storing space,' says Susan.

3 Make use of windows

Don't be afraid to draw attention to the windows in your bathroom. To create a real hotel-worthy feel, add frosted glass for privacy or, alternatively, long drapes for a luxe feel.

Susan adds: 'They make the perfect spot for hanging humid loving plants or position your bath underneath it to frame the space.'

4 Splash out on bath towels

There's nothing better than thick, fluffy hotel towels — and a matching dressing gown, of course. To create this look at home, invest in some 100 per cent cotton towels.

'The thicker the better and try to stick to a plain colour like white or grey for a sophisticated look,' says Susan. 'You could even get them monogrammed in a cursive font for an extra touch.'

5 Incorporate symmetry

'Symmetry is key for a well styled bathroom look and is a reoccurring feature on Pinterest,' explains Susan.

'The best place to organise this is the vanity area. Add lights either side of the mirror, a double sink with matching hardware and the same plants or soaps each side.'

6 Combine texture

Don't be afraid to play around with textures in the bathroom. Susan adds: 'Mixing textures instantly give a boutique hotel feel, especially when combining a wooden vanity with black matte fixtures and tiled splashbacks. Incorporating the old with the new adds character to a bathroom without it feeling dated.'

7 Create a coherent feel

If you're in the process of a bathroom redesign, create a coherent feel throughout. Try sticking to a colour theme or matching hardware items together. If you can, avoid mixing too many traditional and contemporary features — this could make the space feel cluttered and chaotic.

'Installing a rainfall or large shower head will create the chic, luxurious bathroom experience that luxury hotels provide,' suggests Susan.

Before you begin, decide what style what you want to go for. Traditional styles are more timeless, while on-trend colours will create a space that wouldn't look out of place on Instagram.
